Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to experience the soulful sounds of "Fresh" - the latest offering from Color Red Music. This recording captures the essence of that classic Blue Note era, when music was all about improvisation, creativity, and raw emotion.

Recorded in two days at Mell Dettmer's Studio Soli, the band was powered by her husband Mamadu's secret recipies. The music was effortless, the hardest part was the struggle of carrying Delvon's Organ up and down a muddy hill.

So sit back, relax, and let the soulful melodies of "Fresh" transport you back to a time when music was all about passion and authenticity. With every note, every beat, and every riff, you'll feel the energy and excitement of a bygone era. So turn up the volume, let the music take over, and let yourself be swept away by the timeless sound of "Fresh".

Music Inspiration: Studying and playing with the masters in NYC, listening to old records and learning the music by ear. Huge fan of the Organ Trio. The session got booked with Skerik, and Delvon Lamarr, and at the time Delvon was touring heavily. We have about a weeks notice, and I wrote the album. Inspiration was in the air I guess.

Artist Statement: This was one of those effortless sessions. The players are all fantastic and it was a good olde time. Mel the engineer, her husband, Mamadu, cooked us some amazing food, and we knocked it out in about two days. The hardest part was getting Delvon's Organ down the muddy hill in the rain. Them things are heavy!

Earshot Jazz - For the RECORD

https://www.earshot.org/project/2023-03-ari-joshua-meeting-of-the-minds/

The Music Factory Label, February 2023

BY M.V. SMITH

Best known as the founder of Madison Park’s Music Factory music school, guitarist Ari Joshua also operates a label of the same name, steadily releasing choice cuts and album-length statements from his stockpile of genre-spanning studio collaborations with a murderer’s row of musical talent. The watchword is versatility. On his 2021 single, “Say Whatcha Wanna Say,” Joshua conjures Grant Green in a funky organ combo featuring saxophonist Skerik and Delvon Lamarr on B3, while “Contact,” a 2022 track featuring Joshua’s college classmates Robert Glasper and Jason Fraticelli on keyboards and bass respectively, transitions from the rhythmic propulsion of fusion-era Miles to looser Hendrix-influenced rock. Joshua has also developed alliances with luminaries from the jam band scene, partnering with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio’s solo band on a series of recordings that range from Widespread Panic-style blues rock to tongue-in-cheek waltzes and off-kilter funk.

Thirty years ago, the trio of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood were pioneers of a similarly eclectic inside-out mix, straddling the jazz and jam band worlds like no other group of their era. On Meeting of The Minds, Medeski and Martin join Joshua and his old friend Fraticelli in a sprawling, meditative improvisation whose full-stereo spaciousness (think washes of organ or bowed bass swirling from speaker to speaker) recalls Miles’s “He Loved Him Madly.”

The performances on Meeting of The Minds prioritize in-the-moment interaction, with no one player taking precedence over the others. Near-ambient textural passages coalesce into laid-back soul jazz grooves and oblique evocations of Cuban music, punctuated by the shifting moods of a recurring organ motif from Medeski — initially tentative and atmospheric; a thick, churchy roar towards the climax.

Joshua largely eschews traditional lead lines throughout, emulating the liquid tone and shifting pitches of a pedal steel guitar, or exploring his instrument’s percussive capabilities, manipulating his muted scrapes and strums with a wah pedal in a clever approximation of a güiro. The other players employ a similarly wide dynamic range. Medeski skitters across the piano keys like Cecil Taylor, jabs them like Monk, and delves into extended techniques, scraping the piano strings to create shimmering glissandi. Martin’s drumming is propulsive, elastic, and inventive — keeping up a near-constant pulse without feeling busy; incorporating gentle washes of maracas or the tender swirl of his fingers across the drum heads. Double bassist Fraticelli functions as an anchor, lending weight to the exploratory passages with his earthy tone, or digging into lengthy vamps to heighten the tension of the grooves.

While several of Joshua’s releases capture the energy of close-quarters improvisation, Meeting of The Minds deliberately captures the parts of that process other recordings might leave out — the players noodling to limber up, running questions by the engineer, Joshua unplugging his guitar at the end — to provide multiple perspectives on the same raw materials. The Spotify version, for instance, features the session in its entirety, cut into four parts, and excerpted into two dozen fragments. Throw it into shuffle and the snippets are musical palate cleansers. Or, pair the full-length version and your favorite headphones to luxuriate in the immaculate sonic detail. Twist my arm and I vote for the latter, but choose your own adventure.

Quote;

“You gotta let those doves fly, in Woodstock, there are doves painted on everything and that was the theme of the week. It was a really beautiful experience to record with John and Billy. ‘Meeting of The Minds’ is the raw first notes we played, we just let the birds fly. They were really generous with letting me into their worlds. I had a moment while grabbing coffee after all was wrapped, Burgandy who did the artwork has a mural at COSM and I got an invite from her to visit with Alex Grey at his house out there, it was pretty mind-blowing. Everything was lining up, I sent a text to my friend and mentor Michael Shrieve who played at Woodstock, it was really special. I am excited to let these doves fly.” - A. Joshua

“Great art is an expression of the soul and a reflection of one’s life experience. Being a musician is also like being an ambassador of goodwill. I think great players can sense that, and it becomes a compass of making great art together. I get a lot of joy from sharing these recordings and performing, it’s transformative. Just wanna keep doing this.”

1) February 9 – “Meeting of the Minds” – featuring John Medeski, Billy Martin, Ari Joshua, Jason Fraticelli

JamBase will be premiering Ari Joshua’s track called “Meeting of The Minds” this February. “MOTM” features Billy Martin on drums, John Medeski on keyboards, Ari Joshua on guitar, and bassist for Cyro Baptista and Matisyahu – Jason Fraticelli. The record was tracked in Woodstock, New York. “MOTM” is just a small window into the unique body of work recorded on this session. Artwork by visionary artist Burgandy Viscosi

Everything was lining up, I sent a text to my friend and mentor Michael Shrieve who played at Woodstock, it was really special. I am excited to let these doves fly.”

2) January 17 – “The Clinic” – featuring Ray Paczkowski and Russ Lawton

Ari Joshua’s adventurous and recognizable guitar tone is a unique compliment to Soule Monde and Trey Anastasio Band keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and drummer Russ Lawton. In this song, Russ’s therapeutically soulful beat pulses right out of the kit and into your heart, intertwining with Ray and Ari’s salacious melodies and grooves. This trio consistently delivers the goods this being their 11th release. “The Clinic” is a reference to when the song was recorded, a few weeks after the legendary “Beacon Jams” fundraiser. Artwork by Rimbaraw.

“The pandemic provided obstacles but it also created opportunities. It was a lemons-to-lemonade moment for sure. Ray and Russ have a deep vibe. At times I thought, I never heard them play exactly like this before. It shows you how incredible they are as players. They are just all in when it comes to making art together. They could read my mind a little, they are really sweet people. I gotta thank Trey for playing a role in creating a protocol, it really saved me, I quarantined, walked into the clinic, waited for results, and then boom, straight to the studio. Ben Collette was also very helpful in making this music, his studio has that reclaimed barn thing going on, Vermont is a real hang.”

3) January 7 – “The Prodigy” – featuring Ray Paczkowski and Russ Lawton

“The Prodigy” was written in Burlington, Vermont just a few weeks after “The Beacon Jams.” On many of these releases, as you parse his inflections and tones, Phisheads will note that they are at times reminiscent of big red himself. This is part of the shape-shifting tapestry that is revealed as you unpeel the layers of Ari Joshua’s musical influences. This song was written as a tribute, and an etude and Ray and Russ did a beautiful job interpreting the good. To dedicate one’s life to music, one must cast a wide net. The sheet music for all new releases is available on his website in the merch tab, maybe so, or, maybe not.

“The architecture in Burlington, the old churches, the lake, it all made for a magical carousel journey in my mind. I imagined what I would write if I was there at that time, and it just flowed off the page. ”

4) January 2 – “Why Does Love Always Break Your Heart” – featuring Space Owl

This song’s mysterious intro will capture your attention from deep within the musical abyss as Ari’s guitar breathes beautiful melodies and rhythms. John Ewings’ drums crisp and concise compliment Bob Lovelace’s bass tones of delight. Together they come on strong, enthusiasm builds as David Applebaum’s masterful keys chime in. For the jammier of fans the Space Owl stuff is worth a listen, “Why Does Love Always Break Your Heart” is the latest vaulted release from Ari’s jam rock vehicle Space Owl.

5) January 26 – “Eye Just Called, To Soul, I Love You” – featuring John Morgan Kimock, Andy Hess and Eden Ladin

Recorded at Bunker Studio’s in Brooklyn, New York, “Eye Just Called to Soul, I Love You” features bassist Andy Hess (Black Crowes, John Scofield, Gov’t Mule), drummer John Morgan Kimock(Mike Gordon, Oteil & Friends), piano wizard Eden Ladin and Ari Joshua. The track is the debut release from this memorable all-star session, another taste to start of the new year. Art by Blaze.

6) February 24 – “Fresh” – featuring Skerik, Delvon Lamarr, Ari Joshua, Grant Schroff

Skerik, Delvon, Grant, and Ari. You can look forward to three releases on Color Red from this lineup in 2023. Organist Delvon Lamarr (DLO3) and guitarist Ari Joshua have been playing music together going back to the late 1990s, everyone at JamBase is familiar with the superhuman sax-rock-royalty Skerik, and rounding out the band behind the kit is Seattle’s Grant Schroff, most known from his work with The Polyrhythmics. Art by Chris Ball.

“There is a certain telepathy in jazz vocabulary, the music was slamming from start to finish on this recording, great players, great tunes, mostly one or two takes on every song, so excited to share.”

7) Winter/Spring 2023 – “Lights Out” – featuring John Morgan Kimock, Andy Hess and Eden Ladin

8) Winter/Spring 2023 – “Let’s Do It Right Now” – featuring John Medeski, Billy Martin and Jason Fraticelli

"The Clinic" Out Today featuring Ray & Russ from Soule Monde and TAB

Thanks to Grateful Web for sharing the new song, and writing up about it!
Read here - ARI JOSHUA JUST RELEASED NEW SINGLE "THE CLINIC"

Text Version of the Article
‘The Clinic’ Featuring Ray Paczkowski, & Russ Lawton of Soule Monde & The Trey Anastasio Band

Guitarist Ari Joshua continues to impress with a steady stream of epic collaborations in 2022, and 2023. It’s gonna be another breakout year, we are digging this prolific young player, musically he is just overflowing. ‘‘The Clinic’ Featuring Ray Paczkowski, & Russ Lawton of Soule Monde & The Trey Anastasio Band is the latest new song, and it goes  live on Jan 17th. There has been a steady flow of new music from this collaboration, and the compositions range from tasty classic train beats, to vocal rock ballads, to bluegrass inspired 3 chord happy grooves, to dirty  organ trio jazz funk, to all out through composed epic journeys.

Ari Joshua’s unique and recognizable guitar style is a fire match for Soule Monde and Trey Anastasio Band keyboardist and drummer Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton. In this song, Russ’s  therapeutically soulful beats pulse right out of the kit and into your heart, intertwining with Ray’s  incredible melodies and grooves. ‘The Clinic’ has the kind of familiarity that immediately provokes the mind, body and soul to groove, may as well just let go of genre labeling, this is psychedelic music. As to be expected we do hear  a little Soule Monde, and a little TAB in there, but this trio seems to consistently produce original sounding new music. The artwork by Rimbaraw and the song title reference the time the song was recorded, winter 2021.

‘It should be no secret, I have had a lot of musical influences, but I have been listening to TAB and PHISH for years.  I have always sought out organ trio format, and have been blessed to work with alot of organ drum combos. I grew up on Jimmy Smith, and Kenny Burrell.  The pandemic definitely played a role. I was able to talk to Russ, and since Trey had set up the Beacon Jams, it fell into place, iit was a lemons to lemonade moment for sure. I have to say, Ray & Russ have a deep vibe. There are moments where I realize, I’ve never heard them play exactly like this before, it shows you how incredible they are as players. It also was apparent why Trey would keep them around for so long after a few days into this session. They are just all in when it comes to making art together, they could read my mind a little, they are really sweet people, I felt a little like what it was like when I was with my best buds from 7th grade doing music in a garage. Everyone has their own preference feeling like a kid in a garage has always been my happy place.’

Meeting of the Minds - John Medeski, Billy Martin, Ari Joshua, Jason Fraticelli

Ari Joshua, John Medeski, Billy Martin, Jason Fraticelli

This was one of the most magical sessions I have been a part of. I absolutely have loved these players since high school, I saw them around the same time as I discovered Jazz, Phish, and the Dead. My Jazz band was touring the globe and playing festivals and I was exposed to such a core of great music.

In Woodstock there are dovs on every corner, painted, and left over fairy dust from the festival 50 years ago. John and Billy where presented with about 25 new compositions to choose from but elected to make sure we had room to collaborate, in other words do a certain amount of new never done before expressions of the moment, and I am eternally grateful for that window into their philosophy and into their minds.

The way the sessions went I drove up from NYC, and fell asleep at the studio, woke up and Jason and Billy where there all set up and ready to rock. We did a few trio tracks, and it wasn't till the next day John was available.

John showed up and we just blasted off. We did some line checking and it just morphed into a 40 minute improvisational session. Billy is one of the heaviest cats I have worked with, he is as serious as any of the professors I had at The New School. He really is carrying the torch from the great improvisors, but he also has that element of being from the 70's 80's and 90's. I can see why he and John are so prolific. There was alot to lean from these guys, I really hope to work with them again, what a treat.

We are finalizing this one. 40 minutes captured as the first notes we played together, 40 minutes that set the stage for the rest of the session. Not to worry we are deep into mixing the other material, but this one is near ready.

The artwork is Burgandy Viscosi the genius artist that has been a dear friend of mine for over 2 decades. Burgandy is like my spirit animal. She always has the best advice. She is like a pure soul. She has painted 3 murals for us at The Music Factory, and this works is just perfect for this.
